Bye Bye Birdies
Sad, but true. The Philadelphia Eagles lost a heart-breaker yesterday which sent the Birds back east. The kickoff in Arizona was at 3 and by 4 people were wondering if the Eagles could pull out a winner. The Cards pulled out early with a TD in the first minutes of the game. The Eagles replied with a field goal. Arizona came back and scored two consecutive touchdowns while Philly managed to grab an extra 3 from field goal rang. David Akers was having one of the worst days ever.
Not only did he screw up his perfect streak for the post season, he missed a critical field goal and a painful extra point attempt that went slightly to the right. At the half the Cards were feeling good. I had a feeling that Dawkins was in the Eagles locker room yelling and screaming trying to pump up his defense. The first half, the Cards ran all over the Philly defense. I was saddened. But like the positive thinker that I am, I told my compadres that the Eagles would make the comeback… Which they did in the second half! They totally shut down the Arizona offense and scored on two consecutive runs down the field. With the missed point by Akers and missed field goal attempt, the score was now 25 to 24 in favor of the birds. As the timer ticked down to 2 minutes, it looked like the birds were cooked. Arizona came down the field for one more touchdown and to cap it off, a two-point conversion. This meant that with 6 seconds left, Philadelphia had to make a miracle play, score a TD AND make the 2-point conversion just to TIE. Well, it didnt happen so miraculously and the botched trick play at the end of the game almost resulted in another Arizona touchdown. Looks like the birds said, what the heck, lets try, we ain’t going anywere else. Well, good try Philadelphia! We almost had ‘em!
When asked last night if I was an Eagles fan, I replied, “Yep, sure am.”
When the response was, “Wow, I feel sorry for ya, man. Why?”
As Kevin Curtis made the 50 yard reception giving the birds much needed life, I said, “That’s why, ups and downs, man, ups and downs. It’s always interesting with Philly.”
